WEST END QUICKSTART TENNIS

Parents don't send their kids out to play baseball for the first time with a full-sized bat and ball. Children don't play with the same hoop as an NBA player. So, should we expect a 7 or 8 year old to use the same equipment and play on the same court as Roger Federer?

Why not try balls, racquets, and even a net that are sized just right for kids 10 and under? Quickstart Tennis is that program. Quickstart is an exciting new play format geared to children 10 and under. It is designed to get the child into the game by utilizing specialized equipment, shorter court dimensions, and modified scoring that is all tailored to the child’s age and size. The changes in the equipment and teaching method are encouraging kids to try tennis and enjoy the sport of a lifetime from the very first time they step foot on the court. Let's play to learn! See you at Quickstart!

West End is the only club that uses the USTA approved Quickstart program in the Lehigh Valley.

EXERCISE AND BABIES WORK OUT

Joanne Lentoski has been a member at WRC since July 2007. She has three children – Aidan 4, Corine 2, and Elaina Grace 4 weeks old. Joanne and her mother Carole Mikanowicz workout faithfully 6 days a week! They come every morning with all three children, use West End’s Child Care, which Joanne is very happy with, and continue on with their workouts! Carole takes the aqua aerobics classes and Joanne’s workouts include spin classes, running, stair master, and free weights. Joanne says working out makes her feel well and also enables her to maintain her weight; however, her goal is to get back to her pre-pregnancy weight.

The day before Elaina was born Joanne took a spin class and went into labor that very day. Elaina was born on July 16th at 5:32 a.m. and weighed 6 lbs 12 oz. without any complications!

Joanne has now been training for and participated in a 5k on August 14th in Alburtis. She will also participate in a Marathon Relay for VIA on September 12th. Congratulations to Joanne and family!

Aqua Zumba class starts at 10:00 a.m. and is certain to have you “sa-shaying” and grooving to the high energy Latin rhythms. Laura loves to bring her tasty, healthy treats after teaching a high energy class. Come and try the latest and join Aqua Zumba!

EARLY AND DEDICATED

It takes a special person to get up in time to make a 6:00 a.m. Group Fitness class. At 24-7 Fitness Clubs we are fortunate to have the instructors and members willing to do it. We are especially blessed to have instructor Sue Collier who has an unscheduled 6:00 a.m. Thursday morning class for the truly dedicated who can’t miss their morning workout. Pictured are some of the Thursday morning faithful demonstrating their appreciation with a birthday breakfast for Sue.

STILL GOT IT

On Saturday, June 12th, area high school tennis coaches played in the inaugural “I Still Got It Coaches Challenge” tournament at West End. The charity event raised money for the Autism Society of America, and also for West End member Akshay Damany, who was recently recognized nationally for his program teaching tennis to children with Autism. The tournament was created by Al DiCarlo, the assistant sports director at Service Electric. Twenty coaches competed in the doubles event, and the winners were Barbara Van Buskirk of Nazareth High School and Noel Labenberg of Notre Dame East Stroudsburg High School. The final match was officiated by our own Neil Curtis. Thanks to everyone for a great event!
